1/1/11 thoughts on PB snubs...

Excerpts from CheeseheadTV blog in red...
Aaron Rodgers has played like a Pro Bowler this season says Dan Pompei of the National Football Post. "Nothing against Michael Vick, Matt Ryan or Drew Brees, but Rodgers’ performance in 2010 compares well with any quarterback in the NFC," writes Pompei. "Rodgers’ passer rating of 101.9 is second in the conference only to Vick’s 103.6. His average per attempt of 8.3 is second only to Vick’s 8..4. He has thrown more passes of 25 yards or more — 37 — than anyone." Most Packers fans would say he's preaching to the choir.
Being left out of the Pro Bowl hasn't affected Rodgers, thinks Mike Vandermause of Press-Gazette. "If Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers felt snubbed after getting left off the Pro Bowl invitation list this week, he didn’t show it on Wednesday in the locker room," writes Vandermause. Rodgers thought the Packers' record had something to do with it.
B.J. Raji also commented on being left off the Pro Bowl roster. “I guess it’s by reputation,” Raji is quoted as saying by Demovsky. “I can go back to when we were voting, and we were in the room asking the guys who should we pick? So it’s probably one of those things that happened. Obviously, they weren’t going off numbers. I don’t know what they were going off of, but congratulations to him and whoever else made it.” And Raji is exactly right. Reputation influences voting more than anything.

I'm still dumbfounded that Aaron Rodgers was not selected as one of the three QBs...it just blows my mind.  Granted the three QBs selected are on TEAMS w/ better records but (IMO) that SHOULD NOT matter...oh well, I know he's ProBowl quality and has been there before.

B.J. Raji will get there as will Tramon Williams...no doubt about it.

Aaron Nagler: You might be right.

Discussions with several in the Newz Biz, in my emails, etc., have it stated bluntly … that Free Agency, this 2010 season, is so bad there really is no reason to bother looking UNLESS your Team is ranked in the bottom 5. Even then, how would you compete knowing your better options would be to go after Draftees and hope they don’t pull an ELI MANNING and refuse the offer(s).

I don't feel like checking whether duh be@rz were in the bottom five going into 2010 but their getting Peppers was HUGE for that defense.  I'd still give the nod to CM3 but it's pretty darn close.

When it comes to what GBP “needs”, the FA market is a dead horse, plain & simple. Chad Clifton is actually the best UFA out there. Even so, I’m not hearing that Trader Ted will offer him a boatload of cash; nor do I hear that his Agent is pulling a [Drew Rosenhaus]. It wouldn’t surprise me that Cliffy has the intention of retiring a Packer, without ever leaving. I could be wrong – we all could be – yet I don’t get that sense he will get his underwear in a wad and start claiming no appreciation. As far as the RFA market goes, possibly as several have stated there might be a rare coin at the bottom of the shoebox, but I’m not holdin my breath.

Peppers was the best UFA but had to talk to him before he landed in Chicago...but boy did they pay $$$.  Resigning Clifton was a brilliant play by both parties.  Rarely do teams venture into RFA fishing...at least for the worth while players.  Not sure that policy/practice will change with the pending CBA agreement.

No, the Draft is where the smart money will go this year. I also highly doubt the Rookies get offered much in the way of HUGE SALARIES, either – that trend is dying off even if it might not yet be a part of THA NEW RULES, as it were. Seeing as the contention is 2009 Draft was a NEED Operation Draft for GBP – at least the first 3 selections anyway – then will we see yet another replay of that approach in 2010 ???

——
Without a doubt the draft is smart money!  WRT 2010...good question & I don't know the answer but I have a wishlist of my own that goes like this:  Our needs aren't many...maybe 3-4 (OLB/PRush & OT for sure...the other two could be CB & offensive play-maker @ WR/RB (must have speed @ RB)).

I really hope so …. seeing Rodgers (aka: Bootlegger) finally get the protection he deserves, would be exactly what the Doctor ordered. The trick is watching which O-Line player might drop into the Packer’s Lap…

I definitely concur that the franchise guy needs more body guards up front.  Some people also think they need new coaching on the OL...

Is age catching up to Packers' Driver? - JSOnline

Is age catching up to Packers' Driver? - JSOnline: "slot has been the money position.
'It's totally different than what I'm used to,' said Driver. 'I think I'm still playing at a high level, but we're moving around. I'm not playing the one position that I played for 12 years.'
Jennings, a classic X (split end) receiver in his first four years, has played the slot more than ever before. Jones, who generally lined up wide right in three-wide sets, also has worked extensively inside. Nelson can go anywhere now, too."

[caveat: I did not use spell check]
I'm in the camp that believes DD's age is not a big deal and he's accepted his role plus he's over his leg injury. I believe he's a solid #2 WR & will fulfill that role. No question that GJennings is the #1 guy & I think JMike is (tied @) #1 (IMO). I'm also a Jordy homer...

JJones is a strange cat for me to figure out...he's in his contract year and based on his play this year I cannot fathom paying him starter's money (even low-end starter $$). I prefer to draft his replacement for #5 and then move Swain to #4.

The draft choice, in my book, will need good size 1st/foremost (~>6'3.5") & either good long speed or be beefy (ideally a combination -- think SDCharger WR). Based on reading stuff on the senior WRs, it's thin until the underclassmen declare...& it's my WAG that ~4 of them do declare which opens the possibility for one to slide to the Pack or they trade-up a few to get him (or the OLB, or OT, or CB).

One ? in my mind is whether TT will take another OT w/ the first pick...I wouldn't mind a 325+ bruiser @ RT...and move Bulaga to the left-hand side (initially LG). Having TJLang as the 5th starter is another option, and maybe the preferable option by some.

My biggest question is can they get a stud OLB to team opposite CM3?...

Packers defense seeks more pressure - JSOnline

Packers defense seeks more pressure - JSOnline:
"Green Bay — If the Green Bay Packers can get by the Chicago Bears Sunday, they may be able to return to the pass rushing force they were in the first half of the season.
Their fearsome twosome of linebacker Clay Matthews (12 sacks) and Cullen Jenkins (seven sacks) would have a chance to reunite and become a terrifying triangle featuring emerging second-year nose tackle B.J. Raji (6.5 sacks).
There's even a chance it could become a fearless foursome if linebacker Frank Zombo (four sacks) picks up where he left off before suffering a knee injury.
What remains uncertain is whether the Packers will ever get to that point."

Well, for now, it is what it is with CM3, BJ, & blitzing people. I actually thought #49 (Francois) played decent at ROLB...he's intriguing to me anyway. If the Pack plays a heavy dose of dime vs duh be@rz, then maybe J.Bush will have a few blitzes from the slot or maybe NickyC can sneak in a sack or pressure an incomplete. Dom Capers has LOTS of options with his defenders...

I beg to differ...

"Jones looked great, what do you think guys? Rodgers even has said he'd be a #1 WR on many teams. I believe he'll be consistent the rest of the year. Even next year, if he needs to be signed I expect he might be the next guy right along side Tramon."

The above is a quote from my younger brother...he's a big JJones fan; I'm not! JJones pisses me off and is an extremely inconsistent SOB! I hope the Packers DO NOT resign his sorry A$$. IMO, ARodg was either joking or stroking JJones when he made that comment...#1 WR on many teams?...I think not but will give the benefit of doubt that there's at least one team he could start on.

Comments on 7/23/10 daily links (CHTV)

Obviously I'm not an active blogger...anyway, training camp is around the corner plus there's some interesting commentary via the Blogs @ CheeseheadTV.  Definitely what Brian Carriveau brings to the table...especially the daily links!..  7/23/10 had some good stuff.

- Not sure I agree alot WRT Bill Huber of Packer Report & his player rankings for 2010.

- Michael Davidsen of Green Bay Packer Nation says: "I’m on the fence about Will Blackmon."  Well, I'm not and think Blackmon is our PR guy for sure and of course an option for KOR (but think Jordy is a good option...had 11th best KOR ave in 2009 IIRC).

- "That’s not stopping Donald’s Designated Driver from doubting Crosby."  Seems like there's alot of Mason haters out there...I just don't get the hating.  His 397 career points are the most in NFL history by a player in his first three seasons, second-most in the league spanning 2007-09 behind only New England’s Stephen Gostkowski (410), most in franchise history by a kicker over a three-year stretch, and second-most in franchise history by any player over three-year period behind RB/K Paul Hornung (416, 1959-61).

- "Quinn Johnson isn’t a lock to make the roster this season says Michael Rodney of Packer Update..."  I would gladly bet Mr. Rodney a case of beer that QJ is a lock.

- I'm semi-confident both Jordy & James Jones stay healthy this and are interchangeable as the #3 WR.  Maybe one twist to the five receiver set will be four WRs & JMike lined-up next to ARodgers (in shotgun).
